Apparently
disturbed by the worsening state of security in some parts of the North
occasioned by Boko Haram insurgency, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad
Sanusi II, at the weekend, advised Nigerians to rise up in defense of
themselves, rather than depend solely on the security agencies for
protection.
Speaking when members of the Federation of Muslim Women Association
of Nigeria (FOMWAN) visited him, the emir decried a situation where few
miscreants are allowed to take over towns unchallenged.
“A situation whereby 50 people or less are allowed to take over a town is worrying and we must not allow it to happen again”, he said.
Sanusi II said if allowed to continue, the security challenge facing the North could engulf the whole country.
“People must not assume the crisis will not reach their area”, he said, adding that “if it comes, we are asking God to give us fortitude but if He wishes to take martyrs from amongst us, we should be ready to give our lives”.
Stressing the need for Nigerians to embrace self-defense, he said the situation whereby soldiers flee in the face of Boko Haram onslaught is alarming.
“People must not wait for soldiers to protect them. There are even instances where soldiers on ground ran away in the face of attack. We must all be ready to defend ourselves and the youth must be given courage in preparation for self-defense against the insurgents”, he said.
The emir also prayed for an end to the violence and called on the people not to be discouraged.
Earlier in her address, chairperson of FOMWAN, Hajiya Sadiya Adamu enumerated the activities of their association.
