Babies Could Suffocate In Their Sleep, Read Safety Tips Here

DFMSHby72LPAL0E276OEOGnRNew parents, attention please, forewarned is forearmed, right? Half of babies are at risk of suffocating in their sleep – experts warn.
The study that was published in the journal Pediatrics revealed ‘too many babies’ are still at risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Experts who took part in the research insist on raising awareness regarding this probem among new parents.

They warn sleeping with loose bedding, blankets, pillows or soft objects poses a risk of suffocation in babies, especially for those under the age of one. Blankets, quilts and pillows can obstruct a baby’s airway and, if they become caught over a child’s head, they can cause suffocation.
Parents are advised to use a firmly tucked in sheet, or a baby sleeping bag. And remember, no cuddly toys, under or over the infant. Researchers claim that the safest sleeping place for a baby is a simple mattress in a cot with no loose bedding or bumpers.
Things parents should do:
  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep
  • Keep your baby smoke free during pregnancy and after birth
  • Place your baby to sleep in a separate cot in the same room as you for the first 6 months
  • Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress in good condition
Things parents should avoid:
  • Never sleep on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby
  • Don’t sleep in the same bed as your baby if you smoke, drink or take drugs or are extremely tired, if your baby was born prematurely or was of low birth-weight
  • Avoid letting your baby get too hot
  • Don’t cover your baby’s face or head while sleeping or use loose bedding, such as quilts, blankets, pillows or cot bumpers
