They warn sleeping with loose bedding, blankets, pillows or soft objects poses a risk of suffocation in babies, especially for those under the age of one. Blankets, quilts and pillows can obstruct a baby’s airway and, if they become caught over a child’s head, they can cause suffocation.
Parents are advised to use a firmly tucked in sheet, or a baby sleeping bag. And remember, no cuddly toys, under or over the infant. Researchers claim that the safest sleeping place for a baby is a simple mattress in a cot with no loose bedding or bumpers.
Things parents should do:
- Always place your baby on their back to sleep
- Keep your baby smoke free during pregnancy and after birth
- Place your baby to sleep in a separate cot in the same room as you for the first 6 months
- Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress in good condition
- Never sleep on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby
- Don’t sleep in the same bed as your baby if you smoke, drink or take drugs or are extremely tired, if your baby was born prematurely or was of low birth-weight
- Avoid letting your baby get too hot
- Don’t cover your baby’s face or head while sleeping or use loose bedding, such as quilts, blankets, pillows or cot bumpers
