Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo could miss the rest of the season and the start of the 2015-16 season having been diagnosed with a third degree damage of his anterior cruciate ligament.
The Spaniard, 25, suffered the injury in the closing minutes of his side’s 1-0 defeat after landing awkwardly following an aerial ball contest with Mario Mandzukic in the box.
A statement on the club’s website read: “After examinations and tests this morning after last night’s game against Atletico Madrid, Villarreal medical services report that Sergio Asenjo has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, combined with some lesser injuries, and will require surgery.
