Hundreds of young persons, Friday, took over the streets of some parts of Kano State to protest an alleged act of blasphemy against the teachings of Islam and the muslim Prophet Mohammed.
The protest was against a Tijjania preacher, Abdul Nyass who allegedly blasphemed the religion and the Prophet.
The protest also led to the setting ablaze of the structure of a Kano Sharia Court, situated at Rigiyar Lemo, where the accused persons were set to appear for the continuation of their trial on Friday.
The accused persons had earlier been arraigned on Thursday before the same Sharia Court presided by Ustaz Atiku Bello and the case was adjourned for mention on Friday.
The youths were chanting “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great) as they marched through the streets, triggering anxiety among the residents of the state, many of whom had to caught short their Friday activities to go back home.
The aggrieved protesters, who carried sticks and other forms of light items marched to the palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Mahammad Sanusi as well as to the Government House, Kano.
At the Government House, the youths were received by the Governor of the state , Engineer Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Kwankwaso was represented by the Commissioner for State Affairs, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo and the Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Yunusa Dangoni.
They appealed to the leader of the sect, Sherriff Sani Jan-bluo to calm the nerves of the youths.
Comrade, Abdulsalm particularly explained that the governmently summoned a security council meeting immediately they received information about the blasphemous statement.
Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, Magaji Majiya, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the situation is now under control. He asked the public to go about their business.
He confirmed that the part of the Sharia court was set ablaze after a bonfire set by the youths extended to the court.
He said that the Kano State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Ibrahim. K. Idris was personally involved in the management of the situation even as he stressed that Friday Jumat prayers went on peacefully through out the state.
