Africa’s First Official Gay Couple End Their Marriage

The first ever African gay couple to tie the knot in a traditional wedding ceremony that caused a stir in 2013, have gone their separate ways.

Thoba Calvin Sithole and Cameron Tshepo Modisane got married in the town of KwaDukuza in KwaZulu-Natal before some 200 guests in 2013.

A statement released by Modisane reveals that their marriage has “irretrievably broken down and there is no reasonable prospect of the restoration of a normal marriage relationship between us.”

Below is the full statement as published on Modisane’s Facebook page:
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart to inform you that the internationally publicized marriage between me and Mr Thoba Sithole-Modisane has ceased to exist and we are no longer a going concern. I have since filed for divorce and released Mr Sithole-Modisane from his duties, responsibilities and privileges as my spouse.
