Suspected sea pirates have reportedly abducted six oil workers and
four policemen in separate attacks in Nembe council area of Bayelsa
State.
“Policemen escorting Agip barge were attacked on Friday,” reports Vanguard, citing a security source.
According to the report, gunmen had on Friday seized a gunboat belonging to the marine component of the Nigeria Police Force at about 1.30pm, while it was escorting a barge owned by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC).
The gunmen who carried out the operation using a speedboat were said to have laid ambush for the gunboat before opening fire on the unsuspecting policemen.
The hoodlums kidnapped three policemen and the gunboat operator after taking control of the boat.
Sources say police have started investigation into the kidnapping and have set up surveillance along the Santa Barbara and Nembe waterways, to ensure safety of other travellers.
