As the country’s presidential election draws nearer,
the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lawmakers in the House of
Representatives have given the party’s candidate, President Goodluck
Jonathan new condition before they can give him their support.
Vanguard reported on Thursday that the lawmakers who insisted that the president must meet the conditions before they would support him to win the March 28 presidential election.
It was gathered that top on the list of condition is the immediate refund of the campaign funds spent by the members who were denied tickets by their state governors, after they have paid for the party’s tickets as well as mobilising their supporters for the controversial primaries, which they alleged were manipulated by governors and party chieftains to favour their associates.
The aggrieved lawmakers, many of who will be contesting their popularity at the polls on the same day with President Jonathan, also requested the president to urgently intervene by directing the party under his leadership to take over their campaign sponsorship, having emerged as candidates of the party.
The lawmakers, however, advised the President that in doing so, he should not to channel such funding through the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, or their state governors but instead make it directly to those contesting election on the same day with him.
One of the lawmakers, who did not want to be named, argued that their campaigns should have been taken over from the date they emerged victorious at the primaries instead of allowing them to suffer on their own in the name of the party.
They reportedly laid their grievances before Jonathan at a
no-holds-barred meeting called by the President at the Presidential
Villa, at the weekend.
A source disclosed to Vanguard that about 104 PDP lawmakers were in attendance at the crucial meeting, which afforded them the opportunity for the first time to present their grievances and pains against the party and its leadership at the state and national levels before President Jonathan, who is the party’s national leader.
Meanwhile, following the intensity of the forthcoming elections and the desire to avoid any form of rigging, a bill that allows the interception of Nigerians’ personal communications passed its second reading at the House of Representatives on February 24.
Recall also that angry members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of the Onitsha North and South federal constituency have staged a protest against what they have defined as ‘the imposition of a medically unfit aspirant upon them’.
