NAFDAC destroys N500m fake drugs in Anambra

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday made a bonfire of unwholesome drugs with a street value of N484.2 million in Awka, Anambra State. The drugs, which were destroyed by NAFDAC Director-General, Paul Orhii, were made up of counterfeit, fake and expired drugs, substandard cosmetics and food products confiscated from manufacturers and importers in Anambra as well as expired pharmaceutical products voluntarily handed over by Onitsha Head Bridge Market Union and complaint companies, in line with regulatory guidelines, according to Orhii. He said,

but for the vigilance and intervention of NAFDAC, the products would have gone into circulation and their use would have resulted in therapeutic failure, adverse resistance, adverse drug reactions, kidney failure, liver failure and death. Orhii advised manufacturers and importers of NAFDAC-regulated products to continue doing the right thing but promised “unscrupulous Nigerians that are involved in counterfeiting and faking of NAFDAC-regulated products, the hand of the law will catch up with them”. He said: “The fight against counterfeit drugs is a continuous one and we do not need to drop our guard; it is in this spirit that I am soliciting for the unrelenting support of the government of Anambra State, all stakeholders, traditional rulers, religious leaders and so on, to sustain the tempo of the fight”. Orhii said that in Lagos presently, there are six 240-foot containers of with fake Viagra and other products and they will be destroyed soon, while in Awka on Thursday, a Chinese national was arraigned before the Federal High Court for distributing unregistered diapers. He urged individuals with credible information on violations involving NAFDAC regulated products are being carried out not to hesitate to report to the NAFDAC state office. *Daily Independent
