Governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party will find it difficult to continue to exist as a political party after the 2015 elections.
Makinde was a member of the party until December 2014, when he defected to the SDP and was immediately offered the governorship ticket. The PDP also lost formidable members when a former governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala and his supporters also left the party for the Labour Party, in what has been described by political analysts as a negative development for the party in the state.
Speaking on Friday, Makinde denied the speculation that he was planning to stage a return to the PDP and that his decision to be part of the governorship race in the state was to prepare for 2019.
“We have turned a full cycle since the decision to move on from PDP. Our move to SDP is divine because God wants us to plug into His plan for the people of this part of the country. PDP will have to do a lot of work if they have to survive as a political party after the election. That is my own opinion based on what I have observed.
“I can tell by the present situation that people are not going to vote for the candidate of the PDP, but SDP. If you look at the voting pattern since 1999, the personality content is on the rise. The party no longer matters but the candidate. I am sure the same will happen. People want someone with track record of personal achievement to be their leader and we fit in perfectly”, said the SDP candidate.
Makinde insisted that he was not in a haste to become the governor of the state, noting that he was only obeying the wishes of the people who beckoned on him to contest.
“People are ready for us because they are ready to erase poverty in the society. They cannot wait to do that and that is why this project is about 2015 and not 2019. We have failed to tackle poverty in the last two administrations. Providing mass employment that offers N10, 000 to a graduate is not what our people want in the next four years. Their message to us is clear”, he said.
