Confusion in Bayelsa PDP over moves to expel party chieftains

onfusion is brewing in the Bayelsa Chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over moves to suspend and expel some big wigs for engaging in anti-party activities. The state executive committee of the party has inaugurated another seven-man disciplinary committee, two weeks after Governor Henry Seriake Dickson inaugurated a committee headed by the deputy governor, Rear Admiral John Jonah to determine and recommend steps to be taken against those who worked contrary to the party’s interests during the general elections.

The Jonah committee christened, PDP Performance Assessment Committee on Presidential, NASS and State House of Assembly Elections, which has as members, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt Hon Konbowei Friday Benson, acting chairman of the party, Chief Serena- Dokubo- Spiff, the PDP secretary, Chief Godspower Keku and several political appointees of Dickson has been criticised for being set up to witch-hunt perceived opponents to the second term bid of the governor.
A group, Bayelsa Frontier and Integrity for Good Governance Forum made up of Bayelsa founding fathers, leaders and elders had taken a swipe at Dickson for inaugurating the committee, arguing that he was usurping the powers of the party, which is saddled with the authority to inaugurate and investigate matters that concern the party.
The Jonah committee was given two-weeks to submit an interim report, but in a major twist on the disciplinary moves, the PDP inaugurated its own panel with the mandate to investigate and take appropriate actions against members of the party who perpetrated ant-party activities and other acts of misconduct that were inimical to the interest of the party during the last general elections.
The Publicity Secretary of the party, Barr Osom Mackbere, who was also named a member of the disciplinary panel alongside, Mr. Cleopas Moses ( Chairman), Ofulu John- Dede( Secretary), Hon Jonathan Obuebite, Wonyikuro Bekeowei, Chief Mietama Obordor and Sir Henry Domo Spiff, said the committee set up by the party has no relationship with the committee headed by the deputy governor.
Macbere in an interview said the committee would soon send out letters to those who have been accused of engaging in anti-party activities in the state.
He dismissed reports that those being investigated are perceived political opponents of Governor Dickson, stressing that the committee could give all those that would appear before it fair hearing.
