I do 300 press-ups before performing at shows –Daddy Fresh

Innocent Micheal Onyebuchi Oyemua aka Daddy Fresh, a member of the now defunct Pretty Busy Boys, which had the likes of Cash Man Davies and Daddy Showkey as members, made his debut on Felin Records with the album, Follow Me Go Dancehall. He speaks on his stage experiences.
When was the first time you played live on stage?
That was around 1986/87. I was in secondary school. It was at Mokoya High School, Ajegunle, Lagos. Then I was in Class 3. It was the Literary & Debating Society Day. I was a member of the society so I was told to perform and I mimed two songs namely Oh Baby by SOS Band and Rhythm of the Night by The Badge. But the first time I performed on stage as a professional was at the Nigerian Carnival in 1993 at the National Stadium. The show was anchored by Kenny and D1 and it was a nice show. I performed the song, Follow Me Go Dancehall, and the crowd went wild and they did not want me to leave the stage.

Did you panic before you went on stage?
No, I have never panicked before going on stage because I know that I am gifted.
Do you normally take stimulant before going on stage like coffee, gin or any other thing?
No, music to me is natural. Besides, I come from a religious background. I don’t smoke, drink or take drugs. In fact, womanizing came later because throughout my secondary school days I did not know anything about sex.
What do you do weeks or days before your show?
I rehearse every day so whenever a show comes I am ever ready.
What do you do on the day of the show?
Whenever I wake up I pray and later, I do my normal routine which is press-ups. Though, the doctors prescribe between 150 and 180 but I normally do 300. It helps in strengthen my lungs and toning my body.
Do you treat your voice with anything?
My voice is natural. The only food I give to my voice is the exercise and this helps a lot and after that, I eat anything that comes my way
Do you take water on stage?
No, but on a daily basis I take about five litres of water, and this helps in cleansing my body. But on stage, I may take a small bottle of water but that depends on the weather.
Then, how do you get the energy you use on stage?
I exercise and the exercise helps a lot and that has always formed the bedrock of my strength.
How do you relate with your male and female fans?
I handle them diplomatically and I see them as the best thing to happen to me; and I try as much as I can to treat them specially. Without them there will no be Daddy Fresh.
What crazy thing has a male fan done to you?
A lot of crazy things; they have given me money and material things.
What of women?
