No fewer than seven people have been injured as a Boko Haram bomber attacked a college in Potiskum, Yobe, commercial town yesterday.
Armed with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), the bomber made spirited attempts to enter the Yobe College of Administrative and Business Studies (CABS), Potiskum yesterday morning, but was prevented by vigilant residents and local security near the college. CABS was the former Orientation Camp for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Witnesses said that the bomber also had an assault rifle in addition to IEDs, but was intercepted at the college gate, prompting him to open fire on people including students nearby.
Information department of the college confirmed the incident to journalists, adding that the bomber stormed the school at 8:00am yesterday. The department said the bomber started shooting from the college gate when he could not gain entrance into the premises.
It was gathered that courageous residents made efforts to apprehend the bomber when they observed he was running out of ammunition. The bomber was said to have thereafter triggered the IED, which eventually killed him.
Hospital sources confirmed seven injured persons were admitted at the Potiskum General Hospital for treatment even as some of the victims were said to be responding to treatment.
Police Public Relations Officer in Yobe, Mr. Toyin Gbadegesin, confirmed the incident to journalists, and said that the bomber killed himself in the process and injured seven others.
