A policeman has shot dead a woman in Tura, a suburb of Bauchi State, throwing residents into deep mourning. The tragedy occurred at the weekend at about 1pm.
The deceased who is said to be in her mid-30s, was reported to be the girlfriend of the trigger happy policeman.
Trouble started for the deceased, Jamila Rahama, when the policeman, simply called Abdul (aka Barrister) stormed a house in Tura after he received a report that his best friend was sleeping with her there.
He was said to be infuriated following rumours that his lover usually had a rendezvous with his friend.
An eyewitness who does not want his name in print, said the policeman was bitter with the development, he stormed the house. He reportedly shot and killed her instantly.
“After killing her, he left the house. He was later arrested by the police,” he said.
The landlord of the house was initially arrested, but released on bail after nothing incriminating was found on him in connection with Rahama’s death.
“He heard news that she was sleeping with his friend. She had a child for the policeman and he really loved her, but maybe things fell apart between them and she started dating someone and that provoked him,” another source said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State command, Mr Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident to newsmen in his office yesterday.
Mohammed, a Deputy Superintendent, declined to give further details, saying the command was investigating the incident.
4-year-old boy rescued from kidnappers
By CHRISTOPHER OJI
A four-year-old boy, David Gbadebo, who was abducted last Sunday in a Lagos church has been found at Seme border in Ogun State.
There was confusion at the First Baptist Church, Somolu, Lagos, last Sunday when David was declared missing by his parents.
As the worshippers were searching for the boy, a call came from the kidnappers demanding N700,OOO.
The family was devastated until the early hours of yesterday when the father received a call from policemen attached to the Owode Egbado Division in Ogun State inviting them to come over as their child had been found.
A police source disclosed that the kidnappers abandoned David at about 1 am around Seme border, with a tag on his neck and his parents’ phone number scribbled on it for proper identification. A family source said no ransom was paid by the family.
When contacted at about 6.30pm yesterday, Mr Gbadebo, who said he was on his way to the church, said: “Yes, we have found him and we give God the glory. The kidnappers dropped him off around Otta, where some good Samaritans saw him and took him to Owode Egbado police station, from where we were contacted.”
Magistrate quits case over threat to her life
• CJ to reassign illegal possession of firearms suit
By LUKMAN OLABIYI
The trial of two brothers, Sulaiman and Kehinde Sanusi, who were charged with illegal possession of firearms and disrespecting court order, has suffered a setback as the magistrate has quit the case.
Magistrate Adeola Adedayo said the case file was no longer with her, noting that the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Oluwafunmilayo Atilade, has taken over the case file.
The magistrate had last month raised the alarm over alleged threat to her life by the defendants.
The Sanusis and their counsel were absent in court yesterday.
Before the magistrate disclosed that she was no longer in charge of the case, the counsel from the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), Sikirat Dawudu, told the court that there was a legal advice from her office.
But the matter could not go on as the magistrate said she was not in possession of the case file and no information was given in respect of it.
The two defendants are the children of the late Lagos business mogul, Chief Abdul-Rasak Sanusi.
At the last sitting of the court, Magistrate Adedayo of Igbosere Magistrate’s Court raised the alarm that she had received threat letters delivered to her residence from the defendants who are yet to be arraigned.
The magistrate said she was disturbed that the defendants knew her house and had detailed her personal life in the letter.
“I feel very threatened. Let the world know about it so that if anything happens to me and any member of my family, the whole world will know who to hold. I don’t know why a defendant should know my house. My life is at risk,” she said.
The charge instituted by the Commissioner of Police, said the Sanusi siblings had acted contrary to Section 104 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011 and Section 4 of the Nigerian Firearms Act.
4 pipeline vandals jailed 24 years
• Petrol stations fined N3.2mn
By LUKMAN OLABIYI
Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has sentenced four men to 24 years imprisonment for stealing fuel belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
The convicts are Yama Abass, Adeleke Adetoro, Olaniyi Tope and Beliya Abegunde. They were found guilty of stealing 33,000 litres of petrol valued at N3.2 million.
They were arraigned in August 2014 along with one Alabi Olayinka, an accountant in a petrol station in Lagos.
Justice Abang discharged and acquitted Olayinka for want of evidence.
According to the charge, FHC/L/220c/2014, the four convicts with some persons still at large conspired and damaged oil pipelines and stole 33,000 litres of petrol belonging to the NNPC on July 13, 2014 along Epe/Ikorodu Road in Lagos.
They were apprehended while selling the stolen products to filling stations in the city.
The offence, according to the prosecution contravened Sections 390 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and Section 7 (a) and (b) of the Miscellaneous Offence Act, Cap M 17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The court held that the evidence did not link Olayinka to the crime. Justice Abang, however, sentenced each of the four convicts to three years jail term on count three; and six years on four, holding that the terms would begin from July 13, 2014 and run concurrently.
The judge refused the plea of the defence counsel to temper justice with mercy, saying, “nobody should commit an offence and expect the court to show mercy.
“They have no sympathy for this country and the citizens. In spite of all the efforts made by the Federal Government to protect the petroleum pipelines and make petrol to get to everybody with ease, the convicts and their cohorts have made consistent efforts to sabotage and frustrate the efforts of the Federal Government,” Justice Abang said.
He ordered the petrol stations that bought the stolen products to make restitution of N3.2 million to the Federal Government within seven days of the judgment.
The court also ordered the sale of the tanker used in conveying the stolen product by auction within 14 days of the judgment.
The prosecution was ordered to pay the proceeds into the coffers of the Federal Government.
