Schweinsteiger's respect for Scholes

Bastian Schweinsteiger's admiration for Paul Scholes has been revealed as the two midfielders' clubs, Bayern Munich and Manchester United, prepare to meet in Sunday's Legends match at Old Trafford.

Bayern's first-team squad had an open training session at their Allianz Arena before last year's charity clash between the two teams of former players, which ended in a 3-3 draw with Scholes captaining the Reds and getting on the scoresheet.
Ex-United star Quinton Fortune played with Scholes in the United Legends' line-up that day, and will do so again this weekend. In an exclusive interview with
ManUtd.com, Fortune told us this tale about his fellow Red's encounter with the Germany stalwart:
"I’ll never forget something really special that happened, when Schweinsteiger waited for Scholesy at half-time so he could get his shirt. This is someone who had just won the World Cup, and he was there waiting like a fan. I have a lot of respect for Bayern’s players for gestures like that, but it also shows the amount of respect people have for Scholes."
Scholes said at the time: "Schweinsteiger gave me one of his shirts as well, which was nice of him. He is an amazing footballer so it was nice to speak to him and I was quite pleased. I'm not sure why he wanted my shirt though!"
A debate about the best English midfielder of this generation was sparked again recently when Steven Gerrard left Liverpool. Fortune was in no doubt as to where his former colleague ranks. "They shouldn’t even be having this conversation. It’s like comparing Mayweather to Ali - in my opinion, it's just no comparison. It has to be Scholes."
