Jimmy Kimmel revealed the “origin story” behind hit Rick Springfield song “Jessie’s Girl” on Wednesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” The comedic bit featured what was billed as never-before-seen footage of the first time that Springfield and his band ever played the song. Watch the funny video below!
Kimmel told the audience that he had always been a big fan of “Jessie’s Girl,” but had wondered what it was specifically about. “It turns out they shot film of the [first] recording session,” Kimmel said before introducing the clip supposedly from December 1980. The sketch had Springfield, playing a
younger version of himself, getting ready to perform in the recording studio. Also in studio was the band’s drummer Jessie and his attractive blonde girlfriend Monica, who was seated beside him.
The band started playing the song, but as soon as Springfield sang the lyric, “Jessie’s got himself a girl and I want to make her mine,” Jessie stopped the jam session. “Rick, what the f*ck?,” Jessie angrily asked. Springfield smoothed things over until they started up again and went into the chorus, repeating “I wish that I had Jessie’s girl.” Jessie threw down his drumsticks in anger and asked, “Are you trying to steal my girlfriend?!”
“You’re being paranoid. It’s just a song,” Springfield told his drummer. “But if your relationship is that shaky… I’m just saying, maybe she should be with somebody else.” The band started playing the song again, but as Springfield sang, “Where can I find a woman like that?,” he pointed directly to Monica. “This is bullsh*t,” Jessie screamed as he stormed out of the studio, adding, “That’s not cool. F*ck you, Rick.” But then there was a bit of a twist ending.
