Bella Thorne, a lovely little actress you might recognize from a variety of children's shows or teen comedies like "The DUFF," is getting some attention for her boyfriend, another actor by the name of Gregg Sulkin -- you just may not be able to figure out why until you understand that the void left when Kylie Jenner became of legal age needed to filled somehow. Yes, Bella is still a tender 17 years old, while ol' Gregg here is 23. Five years is a very long time when you're a teenager, and especially when you're a minor. These two kids (well, the one kid) just couldn't seem to wait, and we're left feeling uncomfortable and sad and a little bit furious.
It's not that difficult a concept: if you're an adult, date adults, and if you're a minor, date minors. If you find yourself developing a relationship with someone who is a minor, then don't make excuses as to why it's OK, just check yourself and understand that it never, ever is. Unless you're in high school and you turn 18 a few months before your girlfriend, there's just something sketchy about it. It doesn't matter if she's really mature. It doesn't matter if you're famous. It doesn't even matter if you're a woman in her 20s breaking these rules, it's not acceptable. Or at least, it shouldn't be.
And yet they were at the Teen Choice Awards last night, all loved up, using pet names and cuddling like there's nothing even remotely weird about their relationship. That's probably because their families don't see a problem with their relationship, which is a whole new level to the sadness. Wouldn't it make more sense for the families here to say "hold your hormonal horses for a few months"? If it's meant to be, it will be, just not will it's extremely questionable and certainly not in front of thousands of children.
Look, we know that Kylie Jenner wore us all down, that's obvious. She made it hard to care so much about a minor making bad choices. But please, just try to scrape together some feeing for this. Just enough so that maybe somewhere, sometime, some silly teenager might kick a creeper in his 20s to the curb.
