Mbinga. Ufunuo Msyambili, 16, a Form Two student at Malindindo Secondary School, in Mbinga District, must have been the happiest boy at his school on Friday.
The boy, whose mother has been struggling to pay his school fees, did not believe it when this writer broke the good news to him. A good Samaritan had decided to pay his school fees till he finishes school.
The good Samaritan, who preferred anonymity, read about Ufunuo mother’s struggle in The Citizen and felt she wanted to help this mother.
“I read about needy people in newspapers everyday, but I have never got the push to sit there and do the communication. When I read the story, I got that push to write an email to the writer so I could help,” said the good Samaritan adding; “I’m glad I did. Maybe it’s for a reason.”
When contacted by this paper, Ufunuo said he was very happy and very grateful to the kind-hearted Samaritan. He said he would now have a break from being sent home from time to time to collect school fees.
“I thank her very much. I also send her my regards. I thank you too and The Citizen for publishing my family’s story,” said the boy, whose joy was clear.
He promised to do well in his studies now that he will have time to attend studies uninterrupted.
The headmaster of Nalindindo Secondary School, Mr Sabinus Hyera, commended the good Samaritan’s move to help the boy who comes from a poor family.
Mr Hyera said the boy’s school life had been difficult since apart from school fees, uniforms and stationeries were a problem too. Ufunuo has a single pair of school uniform, instead of the required two.
At the time when help came knocking, the boy’s mother, Ms Theodosia Maua, had only paid Sh30,000 out of the required Sh270,000 annual school fees.
The good Samaritan paid Sh200,000, an amount that Theodosia had mentioned as the annual fees.
Mr Hyera describes Ufunuo as a bright and disciplined boy. He believes the boy, who was number seven in his June exams out of 49 students in his class, will perform well in his form four exams, now that he is sure of studying peacefully and completing school.
His mother, Theodosia feels like a heavy burden has been lifted from her shoulders. The single mother of five could not hide her joy when she heard about the good Samaritan’s wish to help her out with her son’s school fees.
“I really feel blessed. May God bless this lady and many thanks to The Citizen newspaper,” she said joyfully.
Ufunuo had been selected to join a ward school in Nyasa District where he comes from after passing his Standard Seven exams, but teachers advised his mother to send him to private school since he was too bright.
He is a day scholar at Malindindo and lives in a rented room where his mother pays Sh 2,500 a month.
