UPDATE: Thuli let JZ off hook

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela also pulled her punches in her "Secure in Comfort" report.

I am afraid. I am afraid because our democracy appears to be in its death throes.

When the head of state takes the lead in the undermining of a chapter nine institution, then we are in trouble. I am reminded of what happened some years ago with the former national director of public prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka, who decided not to charge Jacob Zuma alongside Schabir Shaik on various counts of corruption. Ngcuka said: "Whilst there is a prima facie case of corruption against [Zuma], our prospects of success are not strong enough."

Ngcuka paid a harsh price for pulling his punches.

He was accused by Mac Maharaj and Mo Shaik (Schabir's brother) of having been an apartheid spy.
Ultimately, Ngcuka was forced to resign while Zuma became the most powerful man in the country.
Public Protector Thuli Madonsela also pulled her punches in her "Secure in Comfort" report.
Her report stated: "President Zuma told parliament that his family had built its own houses and the state had not built any of it or benefited them. This was not true." So, obviously, he lied.
Yet, later in the report she made out as if Zuma had simply been mistaken. What a let-off! Promptly, she was labelled a CIA agent, and her end is surely nigh.
