A referee in Spain could find himself in hot water after it was alleged that he asked a female player out whilst their match was going on.
Romanian-born Elena Pavel, who plays for Sporting Huelva in the First Division, complained over sexist treatment from official Santiago Quijada Alcon during the match against Santa Teresa.
According to Spanish news agency Efe, via The Mirror: Pavel claims that Alcon asked her: “Hey brown-hair – let’s get coffee this afternoon.”
Shocked by the come-on, she then became angry, and replied with a stern warning for the official, saying: “Better stick to blowing your whistle.”
Claiming the ref had also “provoked” her throughout the match, she went on to add: “I’ve stopped believing in football, in fair play.
“I feel helpless, humiliated. In the many years I’ve been playing football I’ve never felt so ashamed.”
She claimed that Alcon’s chat up line was only a part of his general bad refereeing during the match, which saw him dish out two red cards to Sporting Huelva players, as well as refusing the team a clear penalty.
Sporting Huelva eventually lost the derby match 3-2, and it remains to be seen whether the footballing authorities in Spain will take any serious action against Alcon.
What do you think of his behaviour?
