The
Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Gabriel Achong, has
warned members of the public, particularly users and marketers of
explosives, such as firecrackers, to desist henceforth, as those caught
in the act would be made to face the full wrath of the law during the
Christmas period.
Achong, who gave the warning in a statement in Uyo, the state capital
yesterday, explained that the ban on the use of explosives, especially
during the Yuletide season, was to avoid distractions that would create
opportunity for hoodlums to perpetrate crimes and criminality in the
state.
The commissioner also warned the youths and persons who engage in masquerading and cultural displays to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the season, saying the police under his watch, will not condone acts capable of breaching the peace.
“As the yuletide period approaches, marketers and buyers, who are in the habit of using and dealing in explosives, such as firecrackers, should desist henceforth as this could cause distractions and threat to security”, the statement partly read.
Achong restated the commitment and readiness of the men and officers of his command to ensure the safety of lives and property of the citizenry and residents, not just during the Christmas period, but at all times.
