Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, over the weekend visited Sudanese President, Omar al-Bashir.
Al-Bashir hosted his Nigerian guest in Khartoum, where the two politicians discussed insecurity and instability in Africa.
Briefing journalists after the 30-minute closed- door meeting, OBJ claimed that it gave the two leaders opportunity to examine the security issues in Africa, and in North Africa in particular.
Obasanjo, who was recently announced his quit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was quoted as saying by Premium Times:
“Peace, security and stability which are fundamental to the development of any nation must be our preoccupation.
“We must do everything possible to ensure that all over Africa, and particularly in North Africa, efforts are made to guarantee peace, security and stability no matter where the need arises.
“My brother (President al-Bashir) and I have agreed to work together with other partners to ensure that stability is achieved in the region and across the continent.”
It is worth noting that Nigeria’s ex President is the chairman of the Africa Union’s commission of inquiry on South Sudan and has been a leading advocate of peace and security in Africa.
Meanwhile in one of the recent developments Omar al-Bashir spoke with Euronews and touched upon the issue of terrorism. During the interview the leader of Sudan accused Israel and US of standing behind Boko Haram and ISIS. He added that “no Muslim who would carry out such acts”.
