Would you live alongside a canal? First-timers tempted by new-build housing developments overlooking the locks

Not so very long ago you would have been considered quite mad to want to live alongside many of the country’s canals.
Smelly, half-drained bogs, with abandoned shopping trolleys lying in the mud, most were no more than sad reminders of an industrial age long past.

Yet that is not a description that Stuart Tong of Old Stables Cottage, Catforth, Preston, would recognise. ‘It is gorgeous in spring,’ says Tong, 65, who has lived in his cottage for 15 years.

‘I sit outside watching the otters playing in the canal basin while the rabbits and hares scamper in the fields and kingfishers fly overhead. It is beautiful.’
His home, on the market for £325,000 with Smiths Gore (01200 411046, smithsgore.co.uk) is a typical period canal-side home.
