Gundogan who joined Dortmund from Nurnberg in 2011 became a key member of Klopp’s team. His first season at the club was a productive one as he helped the team to a domestic double and was also part of the team that lost the Champions League final to bitter rivals Bayern Munich the following year.
Injuries did not help as he missed almost the entire 2013/14 season. He however recovered from a back injury to help salvage a poor season for Dortmund last year as they finished seventh. He had initially indicated that he would not extend his stay at the club with his contract set to expire next year but, may have had a change of heart much to the joy of new boss Thomas Duchel.
Gundogan made 23 appearances in the league last season, scoring 3 goals with 4 assists. This decision may have put paid to United and Arsenal’s interest in the 24-year-old.
