Abdelaziz Bouteflika to run for re-election on 17 April 2014

    ALGIERS- President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika will run for re-election on 17 April 2014, confirmed Saturday the Presidency of the Republic.
    Abdelaziz Bouteflika has filed his letter of intent with the Ministry of Interior and Local authorities and withdrew the subscription forms of individual signatures for candidates in the presidential race, the source said.

    Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal announced Saturday in Oran (432-km west of Algiers) President Bouteflika's candidacy for 17 April election.
    "I announce today the candidacy of President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika in the presidential election of 17 April," Sellal told a press conference on the sidelines of the opening session of the African Conference on Green Economy.
    On this occasion, the Premier underlined that this decision comes at the insistence of representatives of civil society during Sellal's working visits to 46 provinces of the country, assuring that "President Bouteflika is in good health and he in possession of all his mental and intellectual faculties, as well as the necessary clear-sightedness to fulfil his duties."
    "President Bouteflika has given his all for Algeria and he will continue to do so," he said, underlining the need to take into consideration the country's interests for "its stability and development."
    As regards the election campaign, Sellal said that "he does not need to do everything himself, the members of support committees can campaign for him."
    The Prime minister underlined that the next presidential election "will be fully transparent," warning against any attempt to rig the election.
    Abdelaziz Bouteflika will run for a fourth term after 1999, 2004 and 2009.
    Many political parties, including the National Liberation Front (FLN), the National Democratic Rally (RND), Tadjamou Amal Jazair (TAJ) and the Algerian People's Movement (MPA) as well as associations other representatives of civil society have expressed their support for a fourth term and called on Bouteflika to run in the next election to "achieve the different projects launched and carry on his mission."
