Five ministers felled in CCM nominations


Dar es Salaam. A Cabinet minister and four deputy ministers were among early casualties of the CCM nomination contest in constituencies across the country, according to results obtained yesterday.
Home Affairs minister Mathias Chikawe lost the Nachingwea nomination to new comer Hassan Masala who garnered 6,494 votes against the minister’s 5128 votes to record one of the greatest shock defeats of the day.
The four deputy ministers who also lost in the primaries are Dr Makongoro Mahanga (Labour and Employment) in Segerea, Mr Amos Makala (Water and Irrigation) in Mvomero, Mr Pereira Ame Silima (Home Affairs) in Chumbuni in Zanzibar and Mr Mahadhi Juma Maalim (Foreign Affairs) in Paje, also in Zanzibar.
Mr Silima garnered 1,218 votes while his youthful competitor Mr Ussi Pondeza got 1,952 votes to run away with victory. Mr Mahadhi was walloped by a member of the CCM National Executive Committee Mr Jaffar Sanya who garnered 3,368 votes against his 1,785 votes.
In Dar es Salaam, Dr Mahanga who confirmed his defeat cried foul before ditching CCM and signalled he would be joining the opposition. He was defeated by Ms Bona Kalua. Reports last evening also indicated that two more Cabinet ministers Dr Seif Seleman Rashid (Health) of Rufiji and Mr George Simba Chawene in Kibakwe were facing defeat in respective constituencies if early results were anything to go by. Official results had not been announced by the time of filing this report but sources said Dr Rashid had declined to append his signature to the outcome.
Things were also not smooth sailing in the new Mahonda constituency where the Zanzibar Second Vice President, Mr Seif Ali Idd was contesting. Counting of votes had to be suspended there after stuffed ballot boxes were discovered. The exercise had to start afresh and results may be known today.
Outgoing deputy minister in the Vice President’s Office (Environment), Mr Steven Masele managed to get his party’s endorsement to vie for Shinyanga Urban constituency after he garnered 70,900 votes. He was followed by Mr Charles Mlingwa who had 669 votes.
In Musoma, Prof Sospeter Muhongo won the nomination for Musoma Rural after getting 30,431 votes out of 37,144 cast. Prof Muhongo was followed at second place by Hai District Commissioner Anthony Mtaka who got 3,457.
In Butiama constituency, the outgoing MP Mr Nimrod Mkono beat his opponents after getting 19,366 votes while Mr Christopher Siage came a distant second with 2,457.
In Musoma Urban constituency the former MP Mr Vedastus Mathayo won the CCM ticket with 6,991 votes against 1,172 of his closest rival Mr Paul Kirigini.
BUSEGA CONSTITUENCY
Outgoing minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Dr Titus Kamani, also was also nominated to vie for the constituency. He won by garnering 10,697 votes against his rival, Dr Rafael Chegeni who got 9,661 votes.
MISUNGWI
Deputy minister for Energy and Minerals, Dr Charles Kitwanga, emerged a winner in the party’s nomination after getting 26,171 votes, equivalent to 69.9 per cent, followed by Mr Jacob Shibiliti who got 7,009 (18 per cent).
USHETU
Mr Elias Kwandikwa his party’s primaries getting 11,554 votes, beating his two rivals Elfaidi Sikuli (2007 votes), and Isaya Sino (5241 votes).
In Kahama urban Mr Jumanne Kishimba won after garnering a total of 9754 against Mr Kintoki Godwin (433).
In Msalala Mr Ezekieli Maige won after harvesting 11,575 votes against Mr Emmanuel Kipole’s 1197.
In Solwa Mr Ahmed Salum harvested 17,485 votes against Mr Amos Mshandete’s 2028.
Transport deputy minister Charles Tizeba collected 26,368 votes against Eston Majaliwa’s 9,213.
NGARA
Arex Gashaza won with 10,814 votes against Issa Husein’s 7,197, Herena Adrian’s 5,474, Philmon Sengati’s 4,393,Gerald Muhile’s 1,869, Siprian Muheranyi’s 927, Ladslaus Bambaza’s 939, Wilbard Ntamahungiro’s 357.
MULEBA
Deputy minister for Energy and Minerals, Mr Charles Mwijage, has emerged the winner with 20,706 votes against his rival Mr Ambrose Nshala’s 3,523.
In Mbozi deputy minister for Agriculture, food security and cooperative Geofrey Zambi will defended his seat after garnering a total of 11,286 votes against those of Godfrey Mwenisongone’s 4,558, Paza Mwamlima’s 2,956, Charles Chenza’s 2,599.
In Vwawa Mr Japhet Hasunga won after collecting a total of 10,902 votes against Dismas Haonga’s 2,025 and Godfrey Mwashitete’s 1,671.
Mr Innocent Melleck won in Vunjo after collecting a total of 4,548 against Dr Msafiri Mbaga’s 1,457. In Moshi rural Dr Cyril Chami won after collecting 5,610 votes against Mr Ansi Mmasi’s 3181.
In Hai Danstan Mallya won after collecting a total of 8,250 votes against Mr Maynard Swai’s 2,512. Mr Aggrey Mwanri won in Hai after harvesting 12,873 votes against Annaeli Nanyaro’s 1876.
In Nkenge Dr Diodorus Kamala won after collecting 8,229 votes against Florence Kyombo’s 5609 and Asumpta Mshama’s 5,273.
In Muleba South Professor Anna Tibaijuka got 17,429 votes and beat Muhaji Bushako who got 3,349. In Muleba North, Mr Charles Mwijage won after getting 20,706 votes against Mr Ambrose Nshalla’s 3,573.
Ambassador Khamis Kagasheki won in Bukoba Urban after garnering 6,971 votes against Dr Anatory Amani’s 944.
More results will be announced today.
