ALGIERS-The National Company of Rail Transport (SNTF) should be transformed into joint stock company (JSC) in 2019, Minister of Transport Boudjemaa Talai announced Thursday in Algiers, noting the lapse of the current business organization.
"As from 2019, the SNTF should no longer rely on state subsidies and must become an economically viable company, and creator of profitable growth. It must, therefore, abandon its EPIC status (public institution with industrial and commercial character) to become a Joint stock company (JSC)," Talai said at a work and evaluation meeting with executives of the company.
While stressing that the SNTF and organization are "overwhelmed" despite the massive investment programs initiated by the state, the Minister called on executives of the company to find ways to revive the company and to modernize the rail transport of passengers and goods.
Under the guidance of the Minister, the SNTF should adopt modern management methods and implement development plans in this sector, planned by the government.
Along some 4,000 km now, the national railway network will reach, in 2020, a total of 12,500 km connected to port infrastructure, airport and logistics.
Talai has also focused on improving the quality of services offered by SNTF to its customers, in accordance with international standards, to encourage more travelers to opt for rail transport as road or air transport.
