Jurgen Klopp completed his first signing as Liverpool boss earlier this week when the club secured the services of Marko Grujic for £5.1 million.
The Red Star Belgrade midfielder signs a five-year deal, and will be loaned back to the Serbian side before moving to Anfield in the summer.
But the 19-year-old has revealed that the transfer almost collapsed at the last minute because he couldn’t face sitting in an MRI machine for an hour as part of his medical.
Grujic is severely claustrophobic, and the idea of being trapped in the scanner for a lengthy period of time was so unappealing that the whole thing was nearly called off.
The Liverpool Echo report Grujic as saying: “I am very claustrophobic, so it was very scary for me to lie for one hour in the dark in the MRI scanner
“When I heard that the MRI scan was compulsory, I was very close to saying that I didn’t want to do it!
“I was really afraid. I couldn’t stay inside it for one minute!
“I called the doctor and raised a bit of panic so they were persuading me for around 20 minutes before I finally accepted to go inside it again. Finally, I bit the bullet and I got on with it. They made some special conditions for
“After that, I went to Melwood, signed the deals and they took photos of me.”
But with all of the requirements out of the way, the teen seemed delighted to have finally completed the move, adding: “I’ve spent 2-3 days in the LFC camp at Anfield and in the city itself. Everything there left a really great impression on me.
